Correspondence of the governor's office. 1947-1950.

Contains the working papers of the governor of Kansas from January 1947 to January 1950, Carlson administration, including routine office correspondence among the various offices of state government, and subject matter relevant to the social, economic and political situation of the late 1940s. Frank Carlson, a soft spoken man from Concordia, Kansas, was one of the most dynamic governors in Kansas' history. Following World War II, the country, and Kansas as a microcosm, were experiencing a great deal of change. Money and resources, which had been allocated to the war effort, could now be spent on civilian matters. Carlson's administration ushered in a vast building campaign in highway development, construction of new buildings at Kansas' universities, state offices and mental health facilities.

Frank Carlson, a farmer-stockman, was Governor of Kansas from January 13, 1947 to November 28, 1950. He served as a U. S. Senator representing Kansas from 1950 to 1969. Frank Carlson, the son of Swedish immigrants, was born on his father's farm near Concordia, Kansas, in January of 1893. It was near Concordia where Carlson grew up and attended school. Later, Carlson graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in agriculture. When the United States entered WWI, Carlson enlisted as a private. Upon his returen, he bought a farm near Concordia. Carlson first entered politics in 1928, winning a seat in the Kansas House of Representatives. He was re-elected ...
